Nigerian politics has been replete with lots of anomalies and upheavals because the country leaders past and present have dragged religion and ethnicity into politics in their quests for leadership in the country.
It’s not anymore news that every electioneering era across the global community, particularly on the African continent, invariably begets a set of peculiar stories that ordinarily aren’t meant to be harboured in the nature’s womb let alone seeing the light of the day.
Gagdi assumed the leadership saddle in a constituency loomed with ethnic cleavage, religious suspicion, godfatherism, mistrust, leadership inefficiency and zoning quagmire. Bitterness, laced with provocative and acerbic language had already been injected into the once peaceful political ambience of PKK.
He came with an avowed commitment to combating many of the ills that plagued the constituency. His pronouncements before and after his election suggested that he intended to follow through on this platform, bridging the cleavages between ethnic and religious groups, and guiding the constituency through the process of democratization.
Too many people have chosen to believe the wrong things about the member, and have ossified their minds against the truth. But then, those of us who have had the privilege to work with him, studied and known him at close quarters, have a duty to tell what we have seen. And what better time to do it.
It is worthy to note that both tribalism and religion are artificial problems created by selfish leaders in their own personal interest and for their personal benefit.
As part of his effort to cope religious mistrust and suspicion, Gagdi married a Christian lady Mrs Jamima Yusuf Adamu Gagdi and appionted a devoted Christian as his Senior Legislative aide. His pronouncements before, during and after Campaign to bury ethnicity and religious bigotry is further manifested and transpire in his lobby for Federal appointments, Christians still forms the majority.
Again, majority of his personal aides and domestic workers are Christians. To humble Gagdi, religion is like a shoe you wear, you choose the one that fits you. Religion according him, is the path to worshipping God and not a parameter for electioneering or delivering dividend of democracy.
Both Christians and Muslims in PKK have come to accept through Gagdi leadership the bitter reality that in choosing a leader, his or her ethnicity and religion doesn’t matter. For as long as he/she is a great performer, one who carries everyone along irrespective of religious and ethnic difference, one who is committed to securing the lives and properties of the people, that person should be elected to pilot their affairs.
Futhermore, there was a new political phenomenon that is becoming a thing of concern to all and sundry; this emergent phenomenon is the concept of “godfatherism.” It is an ideology which deprives the people of their fundamental human rights of not benefiting from the dividends of democracy. This practice is rapidly converting politics from a civil engagement to an enterprise where only the moneybags are beneficiaries; these godfathers rely on their wealth whereby they sponsor candidates of their choice because of their influence.
Since politics has regrettably been considered as an investment or business venture, rather than an avenue to render selfless service, what else would you expect from an average politician who eventually clinched victory at the polls? Such a person, if assumed duty, wouldn’t fail to please the desires of the political mafia.
Gagdi contested and won election without any godfather. His emergence as a Rep. member without any godfather have brought hope to the constituents. No wonder, Gagdi is not answerable to anybody as a godfather and saved the constituency from being held at ransom by the moneybags.
Thirdly, Gagdi met PKK with mass unemployment and overstretching of inadequate and poorly maintained infrastructure, many constituents have had to seek their fortunes in neighboring constituency of Wase and Langtang.
In less than four years of his stewardship, Gagdi had secured and lobbied Federal permanent and pensionable jobs to over 300 constituents and attracted over 100 physical projects to the constituency. A record unuarguably unprecedented in the history of the constituency.
Similarly, the phenomenal Gagdi practised the concept of accountability and transperancy that were once on paper in the constituency politics. He stands as the only Rep member in PKK political history who is most accountable to the masses and have the effrontery to present to mammoth crowd contract award papers stating the amount approved for projects within the constituency.
What we saw in previous administrations were quit different. We saw caliber of leaders who hide contract award papers and shared the booty between them and contractors.
A lack of commitment by previous representative in PKK and the people to the PKK project – a united, stable, developed and prosperous constituency– and flooding of the polity with hard-line ethnic or proto-nationalists in a constituency of over 5 groups – nearly inexorably land the constituency in destruction.
Gagdi tactical audacity has often flummoxed adversaries, his strategic acumen has wrong-footed opponents. He always seem to anticipate measures and countermeasures before they unfold and his administrative astuteness has set him apart as a visionary leader whose navigational compass has already configured futuristic challenges.
Ask for a Legislator beleaguered from all sides, and I’ll show you Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, the ramrod straight man from Gagdi, in Plateau State. Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi is synanimous to progress and his name is gradually becoming a household name.
The world will always stand still for those who take responsibilities and while those that take responsibilities will stand to be counted, those who choose to sit on the fence and do nothing will have their names consigned to the wilderness of history.
He promised us better representation at the national assembly and he is giving us just, fair and quality leadership. His administration has remained firm and focused on this progressive trajectory, with a constant pledge to recommit to work harder and deliver greater development to PKK people.
